In 1982, Mississippi Governor William Whyte stated simply, “The only pathway out of poverty goes by the schoolhouse door.” Yet, school transportation is at a critical threshold for supporting the daily school travel of schoolchildren across the country. This session both provides a spotlight on school travel issues – land use patterns and transportation funding, staffing, policy and collaboration – while also highlighting innovative best practices to support the safe, on-time arrival of students to school by all modes of travel – car, school bus, public transit, walking and bicycling.
